TWO MORE DAYS…HOLIDAY PARTY IS SATURDAY AT THE GYM FROM 7 TO 10!

Give the crowd what they want

What’s your gym persona? Are you a positive, energetic, focused athlete who people enjoy training with? Or are you a complainer? Do you work hard or do you give up easily?
At Tuesday night’s gymnastics class, a few students became frustrated while struggling with headstands and pistols. Regarding a tripod-into-headstand movement, I overheard someone say: “I can’t do this. I never did one before and I’m not going to get one tonight.” No. Not with that attitude, you’re not.
Why do we even do CrossFit? For the challenge, right? I’d rather gouge my eyes out than spend another mindless hour on an elliptical machine to get fit. So instead, I do CrossFit because it challenges me every day. If we let that negative inner voice win, or give up every time we struggle with a skill/lift/movement, where does that get us?
Instead, challenge yourself to remain positive during training sessions. Rather than beating yourself up for not running faster, lifting more or mastering a certain skill, congratulate yourself for being in the gym at all. This time of year, many people are putting their health and fitness on hold until the new year rolls around. Give yourself a pat on the back for training through the holidays.
Help us make CrossFit Midtown a positive place and let’s squash negative talk in the box. Give the crowd what they want by making CFM a fun, positive place to train!

Oh, and the 50-burpee penalty for saying CAN’T is back in effect. BE POSITIVE!

Welcome to new member Gracie, a GT freshman whose whole family does CrossFit. Her mom Jeanne (background) joined her for Monday’s class while visiting from Connecticut.

HOLIDAY PARTY IS SATURDAY AT THE GYM FROM 7 TO 10!

Cherry picking

Did you see the new December surprise on the blog (scroll allllll the way down… then come back). YEP! From now on, we’ll be posting tomorrow’s WOD* in addition to today’s WOD. I field LOTS of questions each day about what’s coming up tomorrow, so I decided to start sharing it.
BUT – I’m not offering up this info so that you can become a cherry picker. Instead, I want to give you extra info to help you can plan your rest days and choose your training days. Ultimately, we’re all adults and when you decide to train is up to you.
BUT, if you are a:
– newcomer who avoids “scary” movements like handstand push ups, box jumps and rope climbs**… OR A
– bodyweight specialist who avoids Olympic lifting days… OR A
– big strong hoss who dodges burpees and running…
Then don’t complain if you don’t make progress at those movements. I also understand that it’s more fun to do the stuff you’re good at… so use the new WOD info on the blog to build a challenging training schedule, and don’t forget to have some fun along the way.

*WOD: that means workout of the day for you new folks.
**Face your fears. Your coaches will help you scale any movement as needed.

Don’t be a cherry picker.

Gymnastics & Yoga updates

Our 4-class gymnastics series continues tonight at 8pm. Last week we learned headstand & handstand progressions, hollow position and splits/stretching. This class is full, so only those who RSVPed can attend. Yoga with Monica is on Thursday night at 8:15 pm. We have spare yoga mats if you need one!

Bring-a-Friend Days

Do you have a friend or family member who is dying to try CrossFit but needs a little push? Well next week they’ll get that chance! We’re hosting our first Bring-A-Friend days December 13, 14, & 15. So that Thurs, Fri & Sat, you’re welcome to bring a friend with you to any class (including Thursday night yoga!). These classes won’t be capped and your class limits don’t apply that week IF YOU BRING A FRIEND (so you can earn a few extra visits that week if you bring a friend along to your Thurs, Fri and/or Sat class).
We do ask that you be the host/hostess for your friend that day, so a) you have to join them for the class they attend and b) you can only bring one friend per class. Got two friends who want to visit on Thursday? Well then you get to do TWO CLASSES & TWO WODS that day!
The WODs on these days are scalable/doable for all levels. On Thurs & Fri, we’ll do partner WODs so you can work out with your friend. Saturday’s WOD is a four-person team workout.
BUSY DAY SATURDAY! This Saturday CFM teams will compete again at the Atlanta Affiliate League Invitational. Make the trip up to CFHD to see Arielle, Dave, Ellen, Carlos, Brianne and Tirzah compete in the morning’s Mixed division, and at 12:30 pm, cheer on the Elite team of Krystol, Shay, Austin and Matt C. Good luck!
Saturday is also the Atlanta Santa Speedo Run, a fun run which goes right past CFM’s front door. Come join us from 2 to 3pm to cheer on the runners outside the gym. And don’t miss the CFM holiday party that night in the box at 7pm!

USA Powerlifting American Open recap

CrossFit is a hybrid of so many different sports – the one I excel at most is powerlifting so one of my goals was to compete in a powerlifting competition. My friend Cam is a former competitive powerlifter and world record holder, so when he told me a competition was coming up, I looked into it and decided to register. Cam agreed to coach me through it. So on Saturday morning I competed in my first powerlifting meet.
Competitors are required to wear singlets. On four days notice, I was hard-pressed to find one. Apparently sporting goods stores don’t carry them. Luckily, CFM member Derek had an old singlet from his freestyle wrestling days, and it was just my style:

I competed in the 148# weight class, which meant I had to drop five pounds last week. I didn’t eat or drink anything from 3pm Friday afternoon until after I weighed in, Saturday morning at 8. SUCCESS! I weighed 146 (DISCLAIMER: this is not nutrition advice. I don’t recommend you try this just to fit into a pair of skinny jeans). Then I HOUSED a plate of french toast, banana bread, biscuits and gravy and lots of coconut water to refuel/rehydrate before lifting. Nerves + gluten bomb = bad idea.
There are three lifts at a powerlifting meet – back squat, bench press and deadlift. You get three attempts at each. It turns out there are lots of rules at these events. On back squat, to make a good lift, you unrack the bar, wait for the judge’s command to SQUAT, then squat to depth (below parallel), then stand and WAIT FOR THE JUDGE’S COMMAND TO RERACK THE BAR. Simple, right?
On my first squat attempt, at 245#, I did it with ease but forgot to wait for the judge to tell me to rack the bar. NO LIFT. Two more shots to get a good lift in.
For attempt #2, we decided to make a jump in weight, to 259#, even though I hadn’t made my first attempt:

My belt wasn’t tight enough and I didn’t breathe right. FAIL. No pressure Lis. One more fail and you’re out of the meet. That’d be a really cool story to go back and tell everyone. NOT. So I had a mini-panic attack. Cam and my new friend Laura (co-owner of CrossFit Johns Creek) talked me off the ledge. Lifting in a quiet ballroom is weird. I told myself to go out there and pretend I was lifting in the gym with Woody & Dyer, with Rack City blasting in the background. I tightened my belt, held my breath, waited for the judge’s command, squatted the weight, waited for the rack command, and then re-racked the bar. BOOM! Successful lift. I got to stay in the meet. Way to make it dramatic.
The next lift was bench press – by far my least-experienced lift. Luckily Woody was kind enough to bring in his fancy bench from home last week and coached me on some technique. He made me promise that if I won the meet, I would never speak ill of his bench again. That bench is awesome.
On bench press, there are three judge’s commands. The spotter helps you lift off, judge tells you to START, then at the bottom of the rep, you pause until the judge tells you to PRESS, then at the top of the rep, you pause until the judge tells you to RACK the bar. I opened at 121#:

Easy weight. For attempt #2, we went up to 130#:

Two-for-two. Let’s put some weight on the bar. Final attempt, at 149#:

I forgot to wait for the judge’s PRESS command… I faltered when I remembered, and failed the lift. Pesky rules.
Going into the deadlift, I was already 50# ahead of my competition. My opening weight was 20# more than hers, and easy weight for me at 60# less than my PR. There’s also only one judge’s command on the deadlift, so less stuff for me to mess up. First attempt – 280#:

Second attempt – 308#:

After each lift, you have 30 seconds to inform the judges of what your next attempt will be. Cam handled this for me. So after my second deadlift, we discussed how much weight I’d pull for the last attempt, and agreed on 336#. He came back from the judges’ table and told me he’d only increased the weight to 319#… for a minute I was angry, but I figured he thought I couldn’t pull more and trusted his judgment. I was just relieved the meet was almost over. Then when I got out to the platform and they announced my final attempt was at 336#, I realized he’d tricked me. Sneaky devil. Final attempt – 336#:

Yaaaaay, three-for-three! I earned a celebratory vodka-soda for surviving the meet:

I swear it had nothing to do with the tray of glasses I knocked over 20 minutes later back in the ballroom. Bull. China shop.
I knew I’d done well but had no idea where I stood against the competition. Cam said I was sitting pretty, so we hung around to wait on awards. Turns out, I won the Open in the raw (unequipped) division.
I learned a lot and had fun. My big take-aways from the event:
1. Lululemon should make singlets.
2. I’m bad at following directions.
3. Next time, I’ll extend my meet preparation beyond just four days.
Thanks to Woody for the bench press coaching, Derek for lending me that amazing singlet, and to Cam for answering all my silly questions leading up to the meet and for coaching me through it.

The Sayers of Nay

by Coach Jeremy
For those of you making big life changes with CrossFit and the Paleo diet, reinvention is hard–not just for you but for those around you. You’ll hear, “You’re doing what?”… “You’re eating how?”… “That’s not good for you!”… and so on.
So why are people so resistant to your transformation? You’re the one putting in work. They’re not waking up early to hit the gym before work, or turning down the company-sponsored bagel breakfast. You are. You’re putting in work, and a lot of it, which can create mixed emotions for those around you.
Part of the resistance you see is from people genuinely concerned with your well-being. But the overwhelmingly salient reason people resist your reinvention is fear–fear of losing you. Look at cultures and family. The underpinnings of these structures lie in language and food, and you just changed both.
You’re pumped about doing Fran and your heavy snatch and your grass-fed, lettuce-wrapped burger. Who ARE you?
So, how should you deal with this? The easy way is just to stop. Quit CrossFitting. Eat the Standard American Diet.
But nothing worthwhile is ever easy. Reassure loved ones that you are still inherently you. CrossFit won’t change your political ideology or your religious beliefs. It will, however, make you a stronger, healthier and happier person.
You can only spend so much energy pleasing everyone. Just be yourself, and with time friends will accept these new ‘strange ways’ as part of you… just one of those things that makes you more lovable and quirky.

My vision

I opened CFM with a goal of making Midtown residents stronger, healthier and happier people. Eventually, we’ll start a foundation and begin working with high school students to teach them about healthy lifestyles too.
Yes, the theme here is giving back & improving lives…so in the immediate future, I hope CFM can pull together as a community to give back to those less fortunate than we are this holiday season…
We’ve got a few weeks left of our November food drive for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Please clean out your cabinets and/or visit the grocery store and spend a few bucks. The most-needed items are: Peanut Butter, Canned Tuna, Canned Beans, Canned Soups, Stews and Pastas, 100% Fruit Juice, Canned Fruits and Vegetables, Macaroni and Cheese Dinners, Whole Grain, Low Sugar Cereals… no, most of these items aren’t paleo. You won’t be judged for bringing them in anyway!!! LET’S FILL THOSE TWO BARRELS! Then in December we’re hosting a Toys for Tots drive, so once again, I hope we can come together to make the holidays a happy time for some families in need.
